Back in 2007 when I had XM Radio and listened to BPM and Area on my way to work, I heard this song called “Hi Friend.” It had a fresh rhythm and great sounds I hadn’t heard before. I looked at the artist info and pronounced in my head, “dead-mao-five,” confident I got it right. I later heard Matt Darey say “dead-mao-five” on the Nocturnal podcast and smiled to myself as I heard that amazing new track blast on my radio. Turns out it’s pronounced “dead mouse.”
Joel “deadmau5″ Zimmerman is a Toronto native who very quickly rose in the ranks of the dance music scene in just a couple years. He doesn’t like to be called a DJ because he doesn’t mix tracks per se. He creates tracks in the studio, but when it comes to his live performances, all the virtual instruments and sounds are layered on-the-fly with full control over each one’s effects and transport. He does this using Ableton Live (where most of his work is composed) and a custom MIDI mapping of a xone:4D and a Lemur just to name a couple software controllers. This makes his sets unique and very innovative as far as a typical DJ performance goes.

I had a dream last night that someone stole my X1 and 3d controllers. I was FURIOUS! Luckily it was just a dream and we will be able to put out more of the podcast episodes.

Aaaand we’re back!
This next installment was a spur-of-the-moment kina thing (like most of my recordings) that I layed out on Traktor and was pleased enough with to share with all you beautiful people. There are a lot of different things going on at once so I don’t know that I’ll be listing all the songs used. I had a great time with this one though!

I am particularly proud of this mix. I am starting to really pay attention to my transitions (at times, others not so much as you will be able to tell). I can hear a definite difference between this and previous mixes.
