Versus

Everything I’ve seen for DJ Hero looks awful. The controllers, the mash-up choices, the game shots. All of it: utter crap. The only saving grace is that it contains some Daft Punk, but that is the only reason I would try the in-store demo (which I missed yesterday).

The game has always looked like Rock Band for people who listen to rap music. Jay-Z, Eminem, MIA, 50-Cent.. things that make you go buuggggh! There are a few actual house/dance DJ acts in the game

  • DJ Shadow
  • Benny Benassi
  • Tiesto
  • Daft Punk
  • Dizzee Rascal
  • Fedde Le Grand
  • Sandy Rivera
  • Paul Van Dyk
  • Eric Prydz

I love all of these artists. I wish they actually worked on mixing them with songs that would make for a fun and technically interesting experience. Por ejemplo: Eric Prydz – Pjanoo vs the Killers – Somebody Told Me does not sound appealing  at all. It sounds completely random and without reason. Either that or the reason for the mash-up was laziness on the game developer’s part like putting together Tiesto’s Elements of Life with Benny Benassi’s Satisfaction. It’s just a lazy cop out! I started to get excited when I saw that there was a video mash-up of Robot Rock and We Will Rock You. However, I lost interest again after seeing the piss-poor execution of the mix.

I want sampling. I want flexibility. Ultimately, I want to be able to have a track list of individual tracks and mash-up any two that I chose. That is what DJing is about. All of the best tracks and especially mash-ups came out of spontaneity and what the DJ feels would be appropriate at the moment.

Until I can actually get a feel for what the game is like I will hate the idea. It was very promising to hear announcements of the game being backed by people like Tiesto, Daft Punk and Numark for the “elite” controller. But the execution of the game is very disappointing.

We’ll see.
